OWNER: Mary Hewitt, M.Ed. Counseling/Guidance
YEARS IN BUSINESS: 4
WHAT SHE SELLS: Life coaching for individuals who are experiencing distress and disease as a result of life-long patterns created by stress and anxiety
WHY YOU SHOULD GO: To learn how to shift the stress pattern right in the present moment
Stress and anxiety can be a daily fact of life in our fast-paced world. Too much stress can be debilitating and even lead to a variety of medical disorders. Mary Hewitt of In-the-Moment Stress Reduction seeks to help people learn to understand patterns of stress and shift the experience, sometimes in just a few seconds. Ultimately, the goal is to give a client an understanding of the power they have over their stress patterns and replace the stress and anxiety with a sense of calm and well- being.
Mary, when and why did you decide to start your business? There was a time when my life was extremely stressful. Everything I tried to relieve my stress was good for only a short time, and then it would return, often times accompanied by a raging migraine. As a busy mother, wife and daughter, I realized that I could not manage my stress by just “saving it all up to fix later.” I tried a variety of things to help, and then I learned some stress reduction techniques at a HeartMath Institute training in Boulder Creek, California. It changed my whole view of stress, anxiety and brain patterning. The training was powerful. It made a huge impact, and there was much improvement for me. Since then, I have been teaching others how they can get similar results.
Tell us more about your services. What are your specialties? Our stress responses are a pattern. It might come as a shock to learn that most of our stress responses are patterns learned long ago in our past, and might not have anything to do with our present seemingly stressful situation. A person can learn to monitor and alter this pattern, using this method, in about an hour. Additional sessions refine and fine-tune the experience. This is a powerful process. There will be a measureable shift in your stress state, and you will walk away knowing how to lower, monitor and alter your stress response in a short time.
What does being featured as the Local Business of the Week mean to you? Corvallis, in my experience, is a word-of-mouth town. It is one of the things I like about living here. Friends tell each other about events, happenings, and special things they have learned about. Being chosen for the Local Business of the Week is very exciting, and it is one more way for the word to get around about In-the-Moment Stress Reduction. The Local Business of the Week program lets people know I’m here. Sometimes it can be hard getting the word out, and this helps out a lot.
Do you fill an unusual niche? Why should people patronize your business? At this time, there aren’t a lot of people using HeartMath techniques for stress reduction. It is a very easy process and can provide a fast alternative for shifting stress patterns. People just want to feel better, and knowing they can alter their stress response feels very hopeful.
What challenges have you faced as an independent local business owner, and how have you met those challenges? The main challenge is just simply getting the word out about my business. As a local small business, I don’t have the same advertising resources that large chain stores have. Instead, I do live in a great community, there is lots of interest in this stress reduction process, and Corvallis is a great place to live while sharing my work.
What do you feel is the impact of local independent businesses on Corvallis, and what does the future look like for the local independents? The vitality of a community is, in part, due to the diversity of its local independent businesses. Whenever I travel, I am always so interested in looking around at the local business climate. It is very interesting to me to see how different communities grow and expand. I like to see where the areas of vitality seem to be. After I travel, I am always so glad to return here, and see what has grown up during my absence. Our community is alive and so interesting.
What do you enjoy most about owning a local, independent business in Corvallis? What excites or inspires you, makes you keep changing, improving? I get to set my own hours, and I can keep learning more ways to help others. Ultimately, I see that my work comes from a desire to help create more peace in the world. If we feel better, if we are contributing and sharing with each other from a place of calm, not stress, I believe that it benefits all.
What is your relationship to the community? My work is part of the patchwork of many interesting businesses in this area. I like being part of the Sustainability Coalition and the work that is being done to create a highly livable community.
How important is sustainability to you and/or your business? Have you taken steps to save energy, reduce your use of other resources, decrease your carbon footprint, reduce waste, etc.? Sustainability tends to imply that things carry on in a positive way. It is a very strong and optimistic perspective about well- being. When we feel better, we do better. Personally, I support recycling, buying local first, and creating urban wildlife protection areas. I love garden tours, and I look forward every month to all the sustainability events.
Please give us your one-sentence take-away message about your business. Don’t just take my word for it… Stress is not required; in-the-moment, it can be replaced with utter calm.
