Project list for the Economic Vitality Action Team’s consideration


1.    Eco Limits Community Wide Event (s):  Community leaders to engage in an eco limits conversation.  The reality of finite resources and population growth need to be included economic development policy. Current Effort: Prosperity Without Growth Book Discussion Groups have started.  For more information contact Maureen Beezhold.

2.    Development of an Alternative Energy business cluster regionally: This could include both locally produced energy and manufacturing related to alternative renewable energy.   A business Boot Camp format bringing interested regional entrepreneurs might be a good strategy to kick this off. This project still needs leader, if interested please call Maureen or Bruce.

Local Purchasing Campaign:  work with local institutions such as OSU, government,  and large businesses to initiate a policy of local purchasing. This project still needs leader; if interested please call Maureen or Bruce.

3.    “Buy Local” Events:  Expand the efforts of our current Buy Local campaigns by exploring the successful efforts of Bellingham, Washington, as well as creating a directory of local businesses and products.   Current Effort: Kate Lindburg will convene a group to start this project;  if interested contact Kate.

4.    Carrot Mobbing:  A short term project to bring attention to a locally sustainable business by increasing their customers over a short period of time.  Current Effort: Emily Stimac is leading this group;  for more information, contact Emily.

5.    Move Your $’s :  This project is based on the National “ Move your Money” project. Move Your Money project is a nonprofit campaign that encourages individuals and institutions to divest from the nation’s largest Wall Street banks and move to local financial institutions. Current Effort Mike Corwin is leading this group for more information contact Mike.

6.    Corvallis has a local currency: HOURS.  Now it’s time to move it to the next stage by including more businesses and more community members.  For more information contact Courtney Childs.

Economic Vitality: Vision

The Vision for the Economic Vitality Action Team is for Corvallis to grow and maintain itself as a vibrant, diverse and sustainable economy anchored by a broad spectrum of local, environmentally-friendly businesses.


Economic Vitality: Goals

1. Buy Local – By 2015, 50% of Corvallis residents, organizations, government and businesses will buy local first. (Buy Local First = When there is a reasonable local choice of product or service, it will be taken.)

2. Invest Local – By 2020, add 1,000 jobs that increase local production by locally owned businesses, both for export and for local use, emphasizing “green”
enterprises.

3. Produce Local – By 2020, increase local production by locally owned businesses, both for export and for local use, emphasizing “green” enterprises; add
1,000 such jobs.
