The Education Action Team
VISION: Everyone is educated in how to live in ways that respect environmental, social, and economic needs.
Children are the future. If we want to build a sustainable future, we need to help children develop the attitudes and skills needed for that work. The current education system does a pretty good job teaching the three R’s, but doesn’t go far enough in developing individuals for an uncertain future.
The change we seek is not in a particular class or school, but all schools. The education system is large, powerful, and a challenging place to create change. For this reason we know that working within the system is essential.
We’re working on these projects:
Oregon Green Schools
Recycling • Waste Reduction • Resource Conservation
The Oregon Green Schools program will systematize the great work already being done by the Corvallis School District. And it will send a message to students, parents, and the community that these actions are important.
Getting started: Each school needs a coordinator
In January 2016 we made a proposal to the Corvallis School District Board about how to establish a Sustainability Steward at each school, to help coordinate work like the Oregon Green Schools initiative.
Holistic Learning Project
This project is aimed at systemic change that will help students in our local schools develop into creative, resilient, and caring adults.
What do children need to succeed in the future they are facing? Not just the ability to communicate and perform calculations, but also to:
- Have empathy
- Have an abiding sense of place, no matter where they live
- See themselves as members of their community and citizens of the planet
