The Education Action Team

The Corvallis School District 509J is leading a collaborative effort to realize Goal 1 of the Education section of the Community Sustainability Action Plan.

A Sustainability Steering Committee appointed by the superintendent guides the district’s efforts to practice and teach the concept of sustainability to assure that current and future generations of students will enjoy a healthy environment in which to live and learn.  This committee includes representatives of the school district, the City of Corvallis, OSU, and the Corvallis Sustainability Coalition.

Education: Vision

The Vision of the Education Action Team is for everyone  to understands fundamental life-support systems, feels connected to environment, and has high awareness of environmental footprint and what it akes to balance economic, environmental, and community needs while building pportunities for future generations to meet their own needs.


Education: Goals

1. By 2015, 100% of area school districts and private schools will integrate sustainability concepts into their curricula and adopt and model sustainable practices in
100% of their facilities.

2. By 2012, 100% of area institutions of higher education will make a sustainability course required for graduation (a variety of courses will meet this requirement) and expand course offerings to the community.

3. By 2012, sustainability information from various sources, including Corvallis Sustainability Coalition work groups, partner organizations, and external resources,
will be available to all members of the community, e.g. businesses, government entities, general public.

Education: Current Projects

1.  By 2011, school district will integrate sustainability concepts into single grade level.

2. Encourage, train, and engage students in sustainable practices through courses, mentoring, and service-based projects.

3. By 2010, establish a permanent “sustainability center” for coordinating and disseminating sustainability education to all sectors of the community.
