The Health & Human Services Action Team

The Benton County Health Department is leading a collaborative effort to realize Goal 1 of the Health & Human Services section of the Community Sustainability Action Plan.

The Health Department is working with community volunteers to develop projects related to Goal 1, and they have received several grants that are enabling them to work on these projects:

  • Healthy Kids Healthy Communities
    • Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Grant for childhood obesity – $360,000 for four years
    • Focus on policy in South Corvallis and Monroe area
  • South Corvallis Food Center
    • USDA Community Food Planning Grant - $25,000 for 1 year
    • Hired coordinator and formed planning committee
  • Health Impact Assessments
    • Completed Rural Land use policy on Accessory Dwelling Units Impacts (Oregon Environmental Public Health – $10,000)
    • Received funding and beginning year-long study on Urban Agriculture in City of Corvallis Land use plans (Northwest Health Foundation – $30,000)
  • South Corvallis Healthy Eating Active Living (HEAL)
    • Northwest Health Foundation – $24,000
    • Mobile Neighborhood Farmers Market Feasibility Study
    • Garden Steward at Lincoln School
    • Bicycle Racks at Wednesday Farmers Market
    • Double Six – SNAP at Farmers Market
  • Safe Routes to School
    • Funding from Oregon Department of Transportation
    • Education and Encouragement – expand from 2 to 6 elementary schools
    • Completion of bicycle racks at Lincoln and Adams School

Health & Human Services: Vision

All residents have the opportunity to enjoy a positive state of health including physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.


Health & Human Services: Goals

1. By 2025, death and disability from chronic disease (e.g. heart disease, stroke, cancer, chronic lower respiratory disease diabetes, tobacco-related diseases) among
Corvallis residents will be reduced by 25%.

2. By 2025, our community’s discharge and exposure to persistent, bio-accumulative and/or toxic pollutants into the local biosphere will be eliminated.

3. By 2025, 50% of Corvallis residents will volunteer in the community, resulting in 1) dedicated citizens, 2) healthier and happier residents, 3) inclusion of diverse
groups and 4) sharing of expertise to help meet the needs of the community.

Health & Human Services: Current Projects

1. By 2015, increase the percentage of non-smokers to 93% and of adults meeting the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommendations for physical activity to 65%; decrease the percentage of adults classified as obese to 11%.

2.  By 2015, our community’s discharge of persiste nt, bio-accumulative and/or toxic pollutants into the local biosphere will be reduced by 50%.

3. By 2012, educate the Community on the value of and long-term benefits of volunteering for one’s community.
