Local Sustainability Champions

Meet Kevin…Kevin

Last fall, my wife and I ran into economic trouble when the non-profit I worked for began to implode financially and ultimately shut down.  For a few months, I wasn’t paid, and our income was cut in half.  One of our solutions was to rent out a bedroom.  Though we have just 1000 sq ft house, we didn’t need all that space for the two of us.  We found a like-minded person to share expenses and responsibilities, and she’s even begun gardening — something she’d always wanted space to do.  Though I’m employed again now, we’ve decided to keep a housemate long-term who fits well with us and use the extra income to make home improvements such as energy-efficient windows, a solar water heater, and solar panels.  In addition to helping us save money, having a housemate has created extra housing in a tight market, without using natural resources for additional construction.
