The Recycling Block Captain Program, is an innovative outreach program designed to engage Corvallis community members in the process of educating their neighbors about recycling, composting, and waste prevention through the distribution of informational handouts.
Volunteer captains define their own neighborhoods (number of homes and location) and serve as liaisons between their neighbors and the Waste Prevention Action Team. Handouts are developed and provided by the Waste Prevention Action Team three or four times a year. Approximately 4,000 homes are in the current distribution area.
We Challenge You to Get with the Program!
Sign up to share or gain skills, join like-minded people, help Corvallis increase its recycling rate, and make a difference in the community. As an incentive, new volunteers, or those who refer new volunteers who sign up, will be entered into prize drawings to be conducted at regular intervals throughout the campaign. Improve your chance of winning by signing up early or referring multiple people!
Prize drawings will be held in two categories: one for all new captains, and one for those who refer new captain recruits. Winners will be notified by phone or email. Drawings will be held approximately every two weeks, with four smaller prize drawings followed by a grand prize drawing. Drawing dates are:
- January 15 (Winners: Irene Schoppy and Mary Ellen Lind)
- January 29 (Winners: Molly Arnold and Diana Stringari)
- February 12 (Winners: Marcia Shapiro and Ayrril Boggess)
- February 26 (Winners: Maya Abels and Kris A.)
- March 11 (Winners: Leslie Knight, Sandy Riverman, Jan Sitarz and Nancy Erwin. Grand prize winners: Sue Kobold and Laurie Richer)
Grand prize winners from the two categories will receive a $100 gift card from First Alternative Co-op, which will be drawn just after the March 10 annual Coalition Town Hall.

The Corvallis Sustainability Coalition’s Waste Prevention Action Team ran a recruitment campaign for its Recycling Block Captain Program on January 1st through the March 10th annual Coalition Town Hall. The team aimed to recruit 60 new captains.
While the recruitment campaign and prize drawings are now complete, we are always accepting registrations for new Recycling Block Captains.
