Annual Meeting Wrap-up

Annual_Meeting_2015The Corvallis Sustainability Coalition’s Annual Meeting of partner organizations and volunteers was held on Monday, January 12, at the Corvallis-Benton County Public Library.

The meeting featured presentations on accomplishments of 2014 and plans for 2015.  The Coalition has been working on a wide variety of projects in 12 topic areas: Community Inclusion, Economic Vitality, Education, Energy, Food, Health and Human Services, Housing, Land Use, Natural Areas, Transportation, Waste Prevention, and Water.  Their efforts are directed toward goals outlined in Community Sustainability: A Framework for Action, which was developed in 2008 and revised in 2013 with extensive community participation.

A highlight of the Annual Meeting was the recognition of those businesses that have been nominated for this year’s “Good Steward of the Planet” award.  This award was one of several given by the Corvallis Chamber of Commerce at the 67th Annual Celebrate Corvallis Awards on January 16 at the CH2MHill Alumni Center. The “Good Steward” award honors a local business that has made a significant contribution to improving the environmental health of Corvallis through exemplary achievement in business practices using natural, financial, and human resources in a responsible manner that meets existing needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

The gathering was sponsored by Coalition partner First Alternative Co-op. THANK YOU!

Natural Areas Celebration Week Offers an Array of Outdoor Events

The Corvallis Sustainability Coalition in conjunction with our many partners invites the public to participate in a Natural Areas Celebration Week. Free events will occur daily from May 6 through May 15 to celebrate the natural areas in and around Corvallis. The functions vary from interpretive nature walks to prairie workshops to trail work.

The goal of the Natural Areas Celebration Week is to foster community appreciation for the natural areas and build commitment for expanding and restoring the open space of greater Corvallis.

“Our hope is that by sharing ideas and knowledge about our natural areas during Celebration Week, people will be more likely to participate in enhancing them and to support the protection of our ecosystem as a whole,” said Molly Monroe, Natural Areas Action Team leader for the Corvallis Sustainability Coalition. “Natural Areas are an important part of our community. They are part of the puzzle that keeps our ecosystems healthy including the water we drink and the air we breathe.  As sanctuaries to our native plants and wildlife, they provide us with places to go to discover and enjoy the species that live there.”

This year, a new feature was added to the week by providing participant’s with a passport to bring to as many of the events as they are able to attend. At the end of Celebration Week, they can mail them in for a drawing of field guides, posters, and other giveaways.
