Local event is part of national Food Waste Prevention Week, April 1-7, 2024.
A free, family-friendly event featuring live music, food, prize drawings and a unique beer offering will take place on Saturday, April 6, from 12 noon to 4 pm at Old World Deli, 341 SW 2nd Street in Corvallis.
Co-sponsored by the Corvallis Sustainability Coalition’s No Food Left Behind program, Old World Deli, and Oregon Trail Brewery, this “Bread-to-Tap” event celebrates Food Waste Prevention Week, an annual nationwide campaign promoting awareness about reducing food waste, supporting a healthier environment, saving families money, and addressing food insecurity in our communities.
For the event, Oregon Trail Brewery created a special Limited-Release beer, “Recyc-Ale” – an English-style porter brewed with upcycled organic bread from Wild Yeast Bakery. Old World Deli will also offer special Low Waste menu items to demonstrate how edible kitchen scraps can be repurposed into delicious items.
The afternoon’s activities will include interactive songs and music by local singer-songwriter “Magic Mama” Kjersten Hallin and friends, Food Waste Trivia, Food Waste Prevention Bingo, and NFLB’s “Food: Too Good To Waste” videos created by Hallin, who is also the Education Specialist for No Food Left Behind. Attendees can enter prize drawings for gift cards to Old World Deli, Wild Yeast Bakery, Gathering Together Farms and First Alternative Natural Foods Co-op.
“We are thrilled that Oregon Trail Brewery is trying this new beer, as part of our third year celebrating this event! Brewing beer from bread actually goes back at least 7,000 years,” explained Jeanette Hardison, No Food Left Behind’s founder and director, referring to ancient “Bouza” in Egypt and “Kvass” in eastern Europe. Hardison also notes that Oregon Department of Environmental Quality is a key sponsor of national Food Waste Prevention Week and that our state had the third highest number of participating organizations in 2023.
As part of Food Waste Prevention Week, there will be a video contest for Oregon K12 schools and a national K-12 art contest. Visit the No Food Left Behind table at the local event for more information.
