Join with other community members from 11 am to 2 pm at Old World Deli for live music, prize drawings, games, and a unique beer offering!
This free, family-friendly event celebrates Food Waste Prevention Week, an annual nationwide campaign to promote reducing food waste, support a healthier environment, save families money, and address food insecurity in our communities. “Bread to Tap” is co-sponsored by the Corvallis Sustainability Coalition’s No Food Left Behind Program and the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ),
Why is it called “Bread to Tap”? Oregon Trail Brewery created a special Limited-Release beer, “Recyc-Ale” – an English-style Brown Ale brewed with upcycled sourdough bread from Old World Deli and surplus grains from the brewery. The deli’s Chef J.D. will also be featuring his special low-waste menu demonstrating how edible kitchen scraps can be repurposed into delicious items.
The afternoon’s activities will include live original music by local singer-songwriter “Magic Mama” Kjersten Hallin and Friends, Food Waste Trivia with prizes, Food Waste Prevention Bingo, and one of NFLB’s “Food: Too Good To Waste” videos created by Hallin, NFLB’s Youth Outreach Specialist. Attendees can also enter prize drawings for gift cards to local eateries and stores.
Why is this important? According to a recent report by ReFED, individual consumers are responsible for the majority of food loss and waste in the U.S., not retailers or food service, like most people think. 2023 US reports show that consumers spent $261 billion on food they purchased and didn’t ultimately eat. “Imagine being able to save $1,600-$3,000 a year on your food costs, simply by changing a few behaviors,” explains NFLB’s Founder and Director, Jeanette Hardison. “’Bread to Tap’ lets us highlight locally such a critical worldwide issue in a fun way, making learning new habits enjoyable and memorable, and more likely to stick.”
NEW THIS YEAR: Oregon DEQ staff will be on-hand to celebrate food waste prevention efforts in our community, and both American Sign Language and Spanish-language interpreters will be available. Bread To Tap was awarded one of only three statewide DEQ event sponsorships, and Corvallis Mayor Charles Maughan proclaimed April 7-13, 2025, in Corvallis as “Food Waste Prevention Week”!
