Buying used saves money and resources and builds community.
The circular economy is a modern approach that makes sure all resources are used and reused to the greatest extent possible. This is in contrast to the “business as usual” approach of making something, using it and then throwing it away.
Examples of a circular approach:
- Using reusable towels instead of throwing away paper ones
- Reusing waste by-products from a manufacturing process
- Giving a second life to gently used items by donating them to a local thrift shop
We included a list of local thrift and consignment shops on this handout.
Recycling Block Captains distribute information to neighbors about recycling, composting and waste prevention. Previous handouts are available online. The Recycling Block Captain Program is part of the Waste Prevention Action Team.
