Don’t miss the sustainability event of the year!
The 2019 Sustainability Town Hall will be held on Thursday, March 7, from 7 to 9 pm at the CH2MHill Alumni Center on the OSU campus, immediately following the annual Sustainability Fair.
Participants will be seated at tables of eight for a fast-paced, interactive Town Hall program that includes three parts, each with a presentation from the main stage followed by discussion and activity at the tables.
A highlight of the program will be the keynote presentation by Mary Christina Wood, the University of Oregon law professor and author who is best known for her writings advocating for the use of the Public Trust Doctrine to force government action on climate change.
Wood originated the approach, called atmospheric trust litigation, to hold governments worldwide accountable for reducing carbon pollution within their jurisdictions. Her research is being used in cases and petitions brought on behalf of children and youth throughout the United States and in other countries. Professor Wood will be talking about her work to bring about systemic change, as well as the personal lifestyle choices she has made to lower her carbon footprint.
Other 2019 Town Hall highlights include the annual “Community Scrapbook” displaying sustainability accomplishments of local organizations and businesses during the past year, as well as electronic voting by attendees to determine the direction of local sustainability efforts in the coming year.
The 2019 Sustainability Town Hall is organized by the Corvallis Sustainability Coalition and supported by a variety of business and organizational sponsors and individual donors. Primary event sponsors are the OSU Office of Sustainability, First Alternative Co-op, G. Christianson Construction, Abundant Solar, Block 15, Corvallis Chamber of Commerce, and Corvallis Radiology.
The annual Sustainability Fair, which features delicious local food, lively music, and more than 50 hands-on exhibits, will be held at the Alumni Center from 5 to 7 pm, just prior to the Town Hall. Registration is not required for attendance at the fair. The Sustainability Fair and Town Hall are both free and open to the public.
